New MRI Scanner for Tenerife Hospital

In the south of Tenerife in the municipality of Arona is the Canarian Government's Ministry of Health's hospital which is situated in El Mojon, approx.., 2 kms from the bustling holiday resort of Los Cristianos. On the 20th October 2018 work began on installing its impressive MRI scanner which involved the transfer and installation of a gigantic magnet weighing in at over four tons. Crowds gathered to witness the complex installation which involved a special crane to move and hoist the magnet. The cost of the scanner comes to an eye watering 1,280,000 Euros. This is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (Feder) and the Ministry of Health. It is anticipated to begin its important work in early 2019 and will complement the extensive diagnostic work already in existence at the El Mojon Hospital. The new scanner will make it possible for doctors to diagnose a patient’s symptoms by viewing ‘scanned’ images of different parts of the body, obtained by using radio-frequency waves, as well as the magnetic fields generated by the powerful magnet. The South Hospital (El Mojon) is the sister hospital of Candalaria in the north of Tenerife.
