Tenerife Sport and Leisure in Tenerife

In Tenerife, you will find it very inexpensive to keep fit or perhaps, learn to play a new sport or pastime at any time of year. There are numerous sports facilities offering an extensive choice to suit all tastes. For swimmers, in addition to the sea, there are countless public and hotel swimming pools, almost all of which are heated. Every conceivable water sport is catered for such as wind surfing; water ski-skiing, deep sea diving and fishing. There are various tennis clubs, bowling greens, horse riding and of course golf with several magnificent courses.

 

Golf del Sur - Tenerife South

Technical: 6422 yards 72 par, 6050 and 6002 yards 71 par. Situated in the sunny south of the island, approx. 10 minutes drive from Reina Sofia Airport is Golf del Sur, one of Europe's premier golf and leisure resorts. Extending to around 410 acres of land, this golfer's paradise is more of a town with a golf course running through the centre. Extensive facilities are available not just for the golfing fraternity, but also families, with beaches, nature reserves, marinas and all manner of amenities available which have been developed along the Costa del Silencio coastline between the small fishing village of Los Abrigos and Amarilla Golf. The area enjoys superb views over the Atlantic Ocean with a dramatic 'backdrop' of Mount Teide and the mountains. The top level demanding golf course is well manicured, offering 27 holes with wide, green fairways and strategically placed bunkers. The course consists of 3 loops of 9 holes.

Amarilla Golf - Tenerife South 
Technical: 6648 yards par 72.  Natural contours make this a challenging course including a tee shot over a rocky Atlantic Ocean inlet at the 5th hole. Beautiful sea, mountain and views over the countryside.

Golf Club Real - Tenerife North 
Technical: 6291 yards par 71. The oldest course in Tenerife and the second oldest golf course in Spain (founded in 1932) this is a private members club. The clubhouse is shaded by trees and has a unique ambience. This mature course has some very difficult holes. Visitors are welcome to play on weekday mornings, weekend and afternoons being available for members only.

Los Palos Golf - Tenerife South 
A nine-hole “pitch and putt” golf course set in a small village close to Los Cristianos and Palm Mar. Very relaxed atmosphere in a splendid setting popular for practice at all levels and socialising. 

 

Golf - Playa de las Americas - Tenerife South

A beautiful 18 hole golf course where lakes, waterfalls and streams border the wide fairways. Sculptured in a shallow basin with views of the sea and surrounded by a range of hills. A number of important Spanish tournaments have been hosted here over the years. Visitors are welcome all year round.

Adeje Golf - Tenerife South 
A premier 18 hole championship course + 9 hole course course opened in 1998 lying just 5 kilometres along the coast from Las Americas close to the El Duque, Fañabe, La Caleta districts. Spectacular views of La Gomera, the ocean and mountain ranges to the peak of Mount Teide can be enjoyed from this course.

Buenavista - Tenerife North West 
Situated in the extreme northwestern corner of the Island is Buenavista Golf Club. This 18-hole course was designed by Seve Ballesteros and has superb sea and mountain views from every hole. This unique course has many water features. 

 

Abama - Tenerife West

The newest course in Tenerife is Abama Golf, near the picturesque village of Playa San Juan and designed by golfing legend Dave Thomas (who also designed The Belfry and San Roque courses). A challenging and spectacular layout of 18 holes set amongst a myriad of palm trees and tropical flora and 22 lakes. Every hole on the course offers views of the Atlantic Ocean.

 

Clubs and Activities 
Below is a brief list of the more popular clubs and associations we are frequently requested to provide information on. There are a myriad of Clubs and Associations on the island. If your preferred activity is not listed, it will no doubt exist, however, it is not within the scope of this booklet to list every subject. We are constantly asked for 'uncommon' clubs and activities from, 'tango classes' to hang gliding (and yes there are numerous clubs for these two activities). Suffice to say ask and we will endeavour to provide you with the information.

Lions Club International 
The Lions Club of Tenerife South collects donations to be given to the Lions charities. The Club meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at Paradise Park. Bowling Clubs

Squash Club Sur Ten 
Most gymnasiums have this activity with associated club members a popular club is Club Sur Ten. Contact Beverly Hills Club, Sports Centre Tel 922 79 26 11. The players decide where and when to play between them.

British Games Club

Activities include Bowls, Tennis, Croquet, Duplicate Bridge, Mah-Jong and various social events such as quizzes and dances.
The Clubhouse and bar are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Visitors are welcome and temporary membership is available.

The Wednesday Group of Friends 
The Wednesday Group of Friends has been in existence for around 11 years and meets for lunch at 1 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month at the Terrace/Bar Restaurant in the Bel Air, in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz. There are no subscriptions and activities include, besides monthly meeting, citizen's advice, crochet, fishing, finance, dancing, photography, art, rambling, whist, writing and social events. Libraries 
Puerto de la Cruz A large collection of English language books, including children's and reference. Holiday membership also available. Opening times are Monday 15.00 - 17.30 Wednesday 10.00 - 12.00 Friday 16.00 - 18.00

Arona Arona Public Library, Calle La Luna No 1. Open Monday to Friday 16.00 to 18. 00. To apply for membership, please see Los Cristianos Library.

Los Cristianos Public Library is now located in the Cultural Centre. 1500 of the 11,000 books are available in languages other than Spanish. Hours are Monday to Friday 11.00 to 13.00 & 16.00 to 
19.00. Annual membership required. 

 

Markets

Santa Cruz Flea Market Known as the "Rastro". Locals and visitors congregate in the capital for a Sunday morning stroll next to the permanent Nuestra Senora Virgen de Africa market. You'll find just about everything for sale. Starts at 10.00, ends around 14.00 every Sunday.

Puntillo del Sol Flea Market 
Every Saturday at 5 p.m., Urb. Puntillo del Sol, La Matanza. Proceeds go to the Animal Refuge at Punta Brava.

Open-air markets 
Stalls including clothing, shoes, confectionery, fruit, vegetables, local & international handicrafts, artists, and lots more. between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. opposite the Centro Comercial El Duque, every Thursday and Los Cristianos, every Sunday, adjacent to the Arona Gran Hotel.

The Royal British Legion 
The British Legion is dedicated to helping ex-Service men & women. Meetings of the Costa del Silencio branch are held at the Ten-Bel Complex on the first Tuesday of each month, at 7.30 for 8.00

Rotary Clubs 
There are five Rotary Clubs on Tenerife, three on Gran Canaria and one on Lanzarote. The Canarian clubs form part of district number 2210 of the International Rotary Club. Meetings are held weekly.
