In October, the “Swallows” fly to Tenerife and other parts of the Canary Islands for the Winter. They are mostly retired professional people who have either bought a property in Tenerife or have rented an apartment for an extended visit.
The benefits of wintering in Tenerife are enormous. Tenerife’s lovely climate has great benefits for those suffering from arthritic problems, and boasts year-round sunshine. A winter in Tenerife also means a huge discount on the cost of heating a home back in the UK. You need only keep the central heating on minimum during the coldest months to avoid a burst pipe should the weather fall to freezing in the months you are away. And a friendly and trustworthy neighbour or friend could see to the thermostat should it turn extra cold.
Tenerife also has wonderful meat and poultry at the many “carnicerias” or butchers, and at a far lesser cost than in the U.K. so you can dine well on much less. Every little shop as well as supermarkets sell fresh fruit and vegetables, so you can eat healthily while you soak up some much need sun.
