The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the La Orotava, Tenerife, sand carpets. preparations are well underway to make this a year to remember. For the first time flowers and other flora will be interspersed into the design of the main carpet in the square in addition to the traditional coloured sand from Las Canadas as is the tradition. The motto this year is La Palabra de Dios a traves de los tiempos (The Word of God over time). The 'carpet' measuring circa a thousand square feet will have a large triangle at its centre. The festive programme begins in Mid-May with the principle festival taking place between June23 and 30. The highlights are the Corpus Christi festival with the sand carpets on June 27 which is followed by the Baile de Magos (a street dance in traditional dress).
